Occupational Therapy Services
What Is an Occupational Therapist?
Occupational therapists work with individuals with developmental, acquired and traumatic impairments in settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centres, schools, community agencies and private homes. Occupational therapists also work with individuals to promote healthy living through preventative strategies.
Occupational therapists are concerned with human pursuits – “occupations” in the widest sense. We believe that people are naturally motivated to actively express themselves through their various life roles and that participating in a wide range of meaningful activities contributes to people’s sense of identity and belonging. Occupational therapy deals with enabling you to adjust to the psychosocial, physical, cognitive and environmental factors affecting your participation in meaningful pursuits.
What Does an Occupational Therapist Do?
When your routine is disrupted through trauma, illness or stress or you are at a pivotal transition in your life, your health and well-being can suffer. An occupational therapist can help you through this period. Working with your occupational therapist, you can identify barriers to your participation in activities that are important to you, whether they are physical, cognitive, emotional or psychosocial.
Your occupational therapist will identify gaps in your functional abilities and develop a plan with you so you can learn new ways to participate in activities, empower yourself and become involved in those meaningful pursuits. This may include teaching you new strategies or approaches for completing the task, identifying new equipment or modifications that may assist the process, or changing the task to your individual needs.
How Do I Work with My Therapist?
Occupational therapists are trained to facilitate your involvement in life activities in a variety of ways. You and your therapist establish the goals you want to achieve. Your therapist is trained to address your performance, the environment and the activity, and to devise strategies to help you fully engage in your chosen pursuit. This could range from enabling you minimize pain when completing household tasks to helping you develop organizational and time management skills to participate in preferred activities.
